The article 'The late Neanderthal and modern human contact in the east of the Iberian Peninsula' signed by 11 researchers, is based on the remains of human fossils recovered over a decade of excavations at the Sima de las Pigeons in Torre Pacheco, Michael Walker by the paleoanthropologist Erik Trinkaus (Professor of Anthropology at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri) and other national and international researchers.
With an age now securely dated to 40,000 years by different scientific methods, human fossils in the upper levels of the Sima de las Palomas clearly show the anatomy characteristic of Neanderthals.
Thus, the data establish that Neanderthals lingered in the southwestern corner of Europe that is the Iberian Peninsula.
What has aroused the interest of the scientific community is the fact that this dating was performed using three methods: the test of carbon-14, Uranium-Thorium and sediment luminescence stimulation, these three systems has been added to the study of pollen for climate data.
The Director General stressed the important research that is accompanying the excavation of this site and the commitment of the Ministry to unite research museums.
In addition, Ujaldón recalled that in future the Museum of Paleontology and Human Evolution Gordo located in Torre Pacheco Cabezo the site of the Sima de las Palomas, "now refers to the knowledge of human evolution on the peninsula," have an important role.
Paleontologist Michael Walker noted that in the Sima de las Palomas have been found so far 150 human fossils from 10 individuals.
