Kick-off Party Melon (27/06/2008)

Planned activities highlights the traditional melon liqueur tasting of this product in the Plaza of City Hall and a technical conference on the melon that have been held this morning.

The Melon Festival are a recognition and appreciation to the farmers, agribusinesses and agricultural processing cooperatives for their work year after year, culminating with recognition awards "Golden Melon" that have fallen this year on the farmer José Pérez Gómez (The almond trees), and Kernel Export Company.

Planned activities highlights the performance of Maria Villalon, winner of the "Factor X" on Friday June 27th at 23:00 pm and Roser, Saturday 28 at 12 pm, in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, after the proclamation the Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá Cerdá and awards.

In addition, on Friday June 27 starting at 10 am will host the "First Technical Conference on the Melon" in the Performing Arts Center Torre Pacheco.

Philip Chatin, will speak on the melon fields of Cartagena "a reference worldwide. The professor at the University of Almería will lecture on genetics and plant breeding of melon. To close these days the consultant, José María Torres will speak on trends in consumption of cantaloupe.

The Melon parties were created in 1969 with the intention of promoting agricultural activities in the municipality of Torre Pacheco, under the name Agricultural Week, and became an important forum to defend the interests of farmers.

The melon has a long tradition in the municipality of Torre Pacheco.

Among its varieties are "frog skin", "yellow" or "Gaul".
