The Minister of Water, Agriculture and Environment has received the president of the Association of Producers and Distributors of Melon de Torre Pacheco

The Minister of Water, Agriculture and Environment, Adela Martinez-Cache, received this morning the president of the Association of Producers and Distributors of Melon de Torre Pacheco, Juan Peñalver, to congratulate him on the registration of Melon de Torre Pacheco-Murcia in Community register of designations of origin and protected geographical indications (DOOR) of the European Union.

The scope of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Melon de Torre Pacheco-Murcia covers an area of ​​about 900 hectares, with a potential around 18 million kilos annually, in which eight companies are involved production.

Finally, the European Commission published a regulation by the registration of Melon de Torre Pacheco-Murcia as IGP.

The GI scheme is intended to protect names that identify food products as originating in a territory that can mainly be attributed to the quality, reputation and other characteristics.

These names are considered industrial property rights.

PGI products have a certain quality that is attributed to a geographical origin and the production, processing or preparation takes place in the defined geographical area that also takes its name.

The only difference with a PDO is that some of the final manipulations as packaging may take place outside the production area.
