The municipality of Torre Pacheco and has been working on this with projects like the "Healthy Breakfast" or the study on childhood obesity developed in collaboration the University of Murcia.

Physical activity in childhood and adolescence is critical for development, and prevention of obesity.

Childhood obesity is one of the public health problems more serious of the XXI century.

According to a study of the Mediterranean Diet Foundation, childhood obesity has tripled in recent years, Spain is the second European country with the highest rate of childhood obesity, after the United Kingdom.

The Region of Murcia, is the third autonomous region, after Andalusia and the Canaries, with higher rates of this problem.

Overweight in children and adolescents is associated with metabolic disorders becoming an important risk factor for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease in adulthood.

Another study by the College of Pharmacists of the Murcia region reveals that 20% of the adult population of the Region are obese, compared to 16% of the national average.

As part of our region, the health area of Cartagena is the fastest-obesity rate (23.3%).

In our town, this study shows that 33.3% of adults are obese.

All these data are highly disturbing, because, as stated by the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is associated with 6 out of 10 deaths in 10 years and reduces the life expectancy of sufferers.

The obese and overweight children tend to remain obese in adulthood and are more likely to develop at younger ages noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Overweight, obesity and related diseases are largely preventable.

On the other hand, physical exercise in children produces benefits in motor and cognitive skills, being beneficial also for their personal and social group around him, learning to integrate and obtain physical and psychological.

All benefits are derived from an active lifestyle are especially significant since puberty.

At the World Summit on Physical Education (Berlin, November 1999), delegates from different countries presented the results of research conducted worldwide on the benefits of sport and the important role it plays in developing healthy and active children :

Increased self-esteem and reduces the tendency to develop dangerous behavior.

Improves health, prevents injuries and damages resulting from bad posture.

Improved school performance.

Provides experiences in structured activities with clear objectives and outcomes.

Helps develop abstract thinking through notions such as speed, distance, depth, strength, pulse, fair play.

It promotes concentration and participatory attitude.

(M. Talbot, World Summit on Physical Education, 1999)

All children should acquire basic knowledge about how to live healthy and safe.

Because learning is a process that is lifelong, good health and regular physical activity can help prevent health problems and improve quality of life of the school.
