Reception in the City Hall of the Saharawi children and their host families (12/07/2017)

Saharawi children with their host families have been welcomed this morning at the Town Hall of Torre Pacheco by the Mayor, Antonio León, the Councilor for Social Services and Equality, Verónica Martínez, and the mayor of Citizen Participation, Valentina López.

The children have been accompanied by the secretary of the Mar Menor Friendship and Solidarity Association, Fuensanta Postigo.

The Association of Friendship and Solidarity with the Sahrawi People "Mar Menor" is a non-governmental development non-governmental organization working with the Sahrawi population of the refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria since 1997. Since its inception, the association , Has carried out different projects, among which is "Holidays in Peace".

The secretary of the Association of Friends of the Saharawi People, Fuensanta Postigo, thanked the City Council to resume contact and collaboration with the Saharawi people, enabling 5 children to enjoy their stay in the municipality.

The project "Holidays in Peace", aims to give Sahrawi children the possibility of substantially improving their health, through improved diet and medical checks, the possibility of having another image of the world, different from the one that brings them Their daily reality in the desert and, in general, cover the main shortcomings of these children, living a few months away from the harsh conditions of the camps.

Through this project, we also seek to raise the awareness of the residents of Torre-Pacheco to this social reality, and of course, the creation of affective bonds between the two families.

The ages of the children range from 9 to 12 years, and the period of their stay is from June 24 to August 29, a total of 93 children are in the Region of Murcia.

The summer there is very hot, and easily exceeds 50 degrees, so it is brought in these dates, in addition to coincide with the holiday period.

During their stay, the children have medical, dental and ophthalmological visits to control their health status and solve any problems they may have.

For his part, the mayor, after welcoming, indicated that it is a pleasure to collaborate with the Association of Friendship and Solidarity with the Sahrawi People Mar Menor, thanking the involvement of the families, their effort and dedication in this project.
