The regional government begins the construction of the storm tank in the municipality of Torre Pacheco with an investment of 3 million (17/11/2020)

| The infrastructure consists of a 6,000 m3 environmental tank and a laminating basin with a storage capacity of 60,000 m3, the equivalent to the water contained in 24 Olympic swimming pools | It will largely prevent excess flow from the sewerage network in the event of heavy rains from ending up in the Mar Menor The regional government has begun work today to build an environmental tank of 6,000 cubic meters and a lamination basin with a storage capacity of 60,000 cubic meters in the municipality of Torre Pacheco "that will prevent excess flow from the sewerage network before episodes of heavy rains it ends up in the Mar Menor, which could affect the ecosystem ", explained the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment, Antonio Luengo. The infrastructure, which has an investment of 3 million euros and an execution period of 12 months, will be built next to the WWTP on land donated by the town council, with a total area of ??25,462 square meters.

The actions, in charge of the Wastewater Sanitation Entity (ESAMUR), will allow "to collect an amount of water that is similar to that contained in 24 Olympic swimming pools". At present, the Torre Pacheco WWTP does not have a system that reduces the reliefs that occur due to the large volumes that come from urban collectors in the event of heavy rains, "so the regional government undertook to build a environmental tank and a lamination basin that allow the collection of rainwater and its subsequent treatment in the WWTP, avoiding the discharge of rainwater directly to the Rambla del Albujón ", explained the counselor. This infrastructure will prevent, to a large extent, that during the episodes of torrential rains the excess of flows from the municipal sewer network, due to the fact that it far exceeds the relief flow of the sewage treatment plant, goes to the Rambla del Albujón and, consequently, to the Mar Menor. The storm tank will retain a large volume of the mixture of rainwater and sewage for later treatment in the treatment plant.

"It is important to note that the treatment plants are not designed to treat rainwater but municipal wastewater, since rainwater must have another treatment and not enter the sewer networks, but the construction of this infrastructure will help us reduce the environmental impact ", highlighted the counselor. The collected water will be diverted to the environmental tank through a box that has a sandpit and a 10 cm thick grate.

A fine sieve with a capacity of 7,200 m3 / h will be placed at the entrance to the environmental tank and a cleaning system using dump trucks.

The rolling basin has a reinforced concrete floor for mechanical cleaning and a drive system to the WWTP of 2 250 m3 / h pumps for treating stored water. Commitment of the regional government The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment recalled that "the Torre Pacheco environmental tank project is a firm commitment of the regional government with the residents of the municipality and Campo de Cartagena, as well as with the recovery of the Mar Menor and environmental protection ", and for this he assured," we have been taking the necessary steps for years to start this important infrastructure today.

" Luengo explained that "the Community began a process to find solutions in order to reduce the discharges that in episodes of rain are occurring in this population, and in April 2019 the tender project was sent to the Torre Pacheco City Council, requesting availability of the land to be able to continue with the processing, which was repeated in the months of October and November of the same year, and in May 2020, until finally on October 21 the documentation on the expropriation of land file was received destined for the 'storm tank' work ". For this reason, the counselor again made an appeal "to all administrations to work and cooperate in the most efficient way possible, with the sole objective of optimizing actions, reducing deadlines and executing the proposed projects, in order to recover the Mar Menor and minimize the damage that occurs every time there are heavy rains ".
