Open Doors Days at the Sima de las Palomas, Cabezo Gordo, Sunday, March 1 (06/02/2020)

Twice a year the Sima de las Palomas opens its doors to show all its wealth from the hand of archaeologists who work during the summer in the Official Excavation Campaign of the Field School "Sima de las Palomas del Cabezo Gordo" de la Quaternary Prehistory and Paleoanthropology of the Region of Murcia.

The mayor of Torre Pacheco, Antonio León, accompanied by the Councilor for Tourism and Culture, Raúl Lledó and the co-director of Excavations in the Sima de las Palomas, Mariano López, and member of the MUPANTQUAT Association (Murciana Association for the Study of Paleoanthropology and Quaternary) has presented the Open Doors Day at the Sima de las Palomas, which will take place on Sunday, March 1, from 9 am to 2 pm.

The Cabezo Gordo is a protected landscape with great biotic, landscape, paleontological and cultural interest.

In this natural area of ​​the municipality of Torre Pacheco is the Sima de las Palomas, considered the second most important Paleontological site after Atapuerca.

On Sunday, March 1 and throughout the morning, more than 500 people will be able to visit the Water Cave, where they will see a large mining gallery, and a natural lake where water is filtered inside the mountain;

They can also enter the interior of the Sima de las Palomas, where it goes back more than 50,000 years, to discover our origins and learn more about Homo Neanderthalensis;

also, storyteller and visit the Interpretation Center, in the Cueva del Pie del Gigante.

A day in which photography lovers will be able to participate in the photographic competition "El Cabezo Gordo, discover it", and spend a morning with archaeologists in the Excavation of the Sima de las Palomas.

LLedó, highlighted the importance of bringing the Sima de las Palomas and its findings to society, and thus highlighting the importance of the Deposit, one of the most important in the Iberian Peninsula, in terms of Neanderthal remains, as López pointed out .

Next Sunday, March 1, the Open Day "Sima de las Palomas" will be held, from 9 am to 2 pm, with prior registration.
