Rafael Canogar (Toledo, 1935) is a Spanish painter, one of the leading figures of abstract art in Spain.

Disciple of Daniel Vázquez Díaz (1948-1953), in his early work found a way to reach the avant-garde and, soon, to study deep abstraction.

Escultopictórica initially used a technique: with their hands scratched or squeezed the paste on funds rattled colors.

It was a painting in which the initial gesture comes from the heart.

At this point Canogar embodied the best of material painting.

In 1957 he founded with other artists (A. Saura, Millares M. and Luis Feito) and critic José Ayllón the Madrid group El Paso.

Is influenced by the action painting.

Defended between 1957 and 1960, an informal and open aesthetic of Franco's Spain to the international scene.

The informality was essentially an expression of freedom, the unrepeatable and unique, made with a direct and spontaneous calligraphy.

Eminently intuitive and passionate works, carried out with the urgency this time, age and theories claimed.

The informality was to Canogar something substantial and mystical, self-assertion and self-realization.

But that position could not be radical, according Canogar, maintained indefinitely without "academizarse" and insufficient to communicate and express the tension in reality, the new social and political awakening in the world.

The third dimension finally gave solution to the new work, to his second term, beginning in 1963 is gradually returning to the reality of an increasingly complex figuration narrative.

The addition of new material allows your projection into the reality of the viewer, with an explicit and inescapable attempt to involve the spectator of a drama group.

Vicente Aguilera Cemi critic wrote about these works of Canogar "The issues do not express opinions, reflect facts, but facts are human dramas are objectified images where the human, object and amount, become symbolic hierarchy ...."

In 1975 he abandoned this realism makes for a period essentially abstract work, an analysis of the painting, the support of the two-dimensional painting.

But Canogar need to invent a nuevaiconografía, restoring memory and - in a tribute to the historical avant-performed through the skin, head, face, as representing the man who loses his individuality and becomes plastic sign, while hanger to hang the painting.

Canogar makes his work as a structural part of his work, the reality of the man who is immersed is its own contradictions.

In 1982 he received the National Prize of Plastic Arts.

There are his works in several museums of modern art: Cuenca, Madrid, Barcelona, Turin, Rome, Caracas and Pittsburgh (Canrnegie Inst, etc.).

Among the positions he has held include:
