Cerdá notes that the "success" of melon Torre Pacheco is in production time and adapting to consumer tastes (05/07/2013)

Melon is one of the four crops with higher production in the region, behind the lettuce, lemon and tomato

The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, along with the Mayor of Torre Pacheco, Daniel García Madrid, and the president of the Association of Producers and Distributors of Melon, Juan Penalver, closed today Melon V Technical Conference, which fall during this weekend at the Festival of melon, held since 1969 in the municipality.

The agriculture minister said that the "success" of melon grown in Torre Pacheco "is in production time and adapting to consumer tastes."

Cerda noted that "it is one of the four crops with higher production in the region", behind the lettuce, lemon and tomato.

The Minister of Agriculture explained that the crop "is a source of opportunity, employment and income" in the municipality pachequero, adding that "part of its agricultural heritage."

He recalled that in the decade of the 60s "was an important social and settled in the town to young farmers for the profitability supposed" and stressed that "the waters of the Tajo-Segura consolidated their production."

The melon regional surface exceeds 6,000 hectares, of which 1,700 belong to the municipality of Torre Pacheco, where are located most of the crop.

It covers the Campo de Cartagena and Murcia the districts that are adjacent: Avileses, Bathrooms and Beggar, Corvera, Gea and Truyols, Lobosillo, Los Martínez del Puerto, Valladolises and Sucina.

Melon production "remains without major fluctuations in recent years," said the counselor, but added that "has had a slight increase in its market value."

Annual production of melon in the region is of 226,000 tons, which generate an economic value of 123 million euros.

The agriculture minister said Torre Pacheco melon "is deserving of a quality" and announced that its certification file "restarts" for the 'toad skin' as a single variety.

The characteristics of this type of melon are sweetness, juiciness and flavor, and a pulp harder allowing once harvested, able to maintain these qualities for a longer time.

Also, is identified by its reputation in the Campo de Cartagena and has organoleptic characteristics, climatic and historical cultured differentiated compared to other producing areas.

It is also commercially backed his great demand in the market.
