The Mayor of Torre Pacheco and the Minister of Culture and Tourism visit the Sima de las Palomas and works from the Museum of Paleontology and Human Evolution (08/01/2013)

This morning the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, with the mayor of Torre-Pacheco visited the Sima de las Palomas and works from the Museum of Paleontology and Human Evolution in the Region of Murcia.

Paleoanthropological excavation of the site of the Sima de las Palomas Cabezo Gordo has shown the presence of the skeletons of two adults and a juvenile, in connection with their anatomical and skulls and jaws of the extinct species of fossil man named European Neanderthal or Homo neanderthalensis, which lived here 50,000 years ago.

After the visit of the hand Sima professor of anthropology at the University of Murcia, Michael Walker, the mayor and the director moved to work on the future Museum of Paleontology and Human Evolution in the Region of Murcia, which located near the Cabezo Gordo and which explains the findings of this and other fossil sites in the Region of Murcia.

The architectural design of the museum is due to the architects Federico Soriano and Dolores Palacios, both present at the visit.

The building, which is in an advanced state of construction, consists of 6 levels that result in a total of 2,547 square meters of exhibition space.

Federico Soriano, architect, describes it as a unique building, with a facade chameleon playing with the environment and the interior is amazing and well prepared to host an exhibition show.

The building is located on a plot of municipal ownership, with a size of 12,000 square meters, located on the road from San Cayetano, and represents an investment of more than six million euros (6,545. 464) by the Community.

The theme of the exhibition will be to advance through geologic time, showing the major milestones that have occurred throughout the history of life on Earth.

The route will connect a series of spaces that show, in a didactic, deposits and fossil specimens representing each of the time periods represented in the soil Murcia.

For its direct connection to the building site must mention the site of the Sima de las Palomas, the Cabezo Gordo de Torre Pacheco, taking a leading role in the permanent exhibition.

The future museum will have a valuable collection of original fossils, spectacular views of animals and plants and audiovisual resources, made under the scripts proposed by paleontologists and are distributed throughout the rooms of the building.
