El Cabezo Gordo, Neandertal mountain (28/12/2016)

In 1991 the Jaw and Jaw of Neandertal appeared in Cabezo Gordo, initiating the scientific investigation, being since then codirector of the same one, Professor Walker.

In July 1994 the scaffolding tower was installed, which allowed the beginning of official excavations that same summer, without interruption to date.

Every summer there is an excavation campaign in the Sima de las Palomas del Cabezo Gordo.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the discovery of this prehistoric site which, after campaign, continues to contribute and increase the archaeological heritage with new fossil remains, turning the Sima de las Palomas into the most important Neanderthal man's site Spanish Mediterranean Arc and the second in importance on the Fossil Man in the Iberian Peninsula, valued and studied by the international scientific community.

In 2001, the exhibition "Archaic and Neanderthal Europeans" was exhibited for the first time in Vienna, produced by the Museum of Science and Water of Murcia and co-organized by the Torre-Pacheco Town Hall.

This exhibition, of great success, roamed by different national and European museums, some of as much prestige as the one of Oxford.

Its main objective was to disseminate our paleontological heritage and to promote knowledge about the history and culture of the peoples who inhabited Europe.

Its main protagonists: the Neanderthals;

Their way of life, the environment that surrounded them, the diseases they suffered, their social relations, etc.

And that sample was the germ that we can enjoy here today, in the Exhibition Hall of the old Town Hall.

In this exhibition has been made an update of the scientific contents, which are shown in 12 modules, the visitor in a graphic and above all didactic will know: How the Sima de las Palomas was formed;

The excavation process in the Sima de las Palomas;

The findings found so far, the excavation process, vegetation, fauna, among others, for this there is a room sheet, with the contents, both in Spanish and English.

This permanent exhibition intends to keep updating and will continue to work on it, soon to be completed with audio-visual documents.

The Exhibition can be visited in the morning and at different times prior appointment at the Tourist Office of Torre-Pacheco.
